Andalusia begins the year reinforcing its position as a safe destination for travel & tourism. To do this, it has introduced free medical insurance with Covid-19 coverage for non-resident international tourists. The Vice President of the Board and the Tourism Council has said that to be eligible for this free insurance travelers must be housed in any type of regulated establishment in the Community, that is, hotels, tourist apartments, pensions, hostels, aparthotels, campsites, and rural houses With this initiative, the Board wants to encourage the arrival of travelers from outside the borders despite the current covid19 pandemic, which is expected to continue throughout the year, the contract worth 700,000 euros was awarded ‘Europ Assistance’, the only company which bid for the contract.
“This is a free medical insurance for all foreign tourists, who are not residents, who travel to Andalusia by any means of transport between January 1 2021 and December 31 2021 and without age limits”, says the Ministry of Tourism, who have also said that this initiative may be extended if deemed necessary. The only condition is that you stay in a regulated establishment so that the international traveler who arrives at any Andalusian destination will be covered for the medical, surgical and hospitalisation expenses for the corona virus, costs of transport and repatriation and the costs incurred from having their stay extended by quarantine. In addition, tourists will have at their disposal a ‘call center’ which will be open 24 hours a day in several different languages.
The Ministry of Tourism point out that with this measure they have responded to a demand from the tourist sector and are promoting international tourism here in Andalusia. They aim to support the regulated tourist accommodation sector which has been hit hard by the virus. They added that they want to encourage business to reopen, and for business to generate income in a region which heavily relies on tourism. They estimate that 11,000,000 international travellers will benefit from this free insurance in Andalucia.
The Board has said that they will develop a specific international communication campaign to promote the insurance in Andalusia. The objective is “to align Andalusia in the current trend, where in addition to offering tourist experiences, destinations must sell values and the most most important value for tourists is safety.
To conclude if you visit Andalusia in 2021 as a tourist and not as a resident and you suffer from covid you are insured for free. At Just Law Solicitors we think this will be especially welcome for people who are unable to get health insurance which covers the corona virus.
Of course at the time of writing the borders are still closed to tourists and when the borders do open the tourists will still need a negative PCR test. We will keep you informed of any changes.
