Recently the train ticketing system has changed slightly. You use the machine in the usual way but when if asks if you want to use your Renfe Tu card say No. . You continue to follow the instructions on the machine ie, destination, number of tickets etc. then pay. The machine will dispense the correct number of tickets which are now scanned on the red scanner to gain access to the platform. Do the same to exit at your destination but keep the tickets. You will be charged 50 cents extra for each ticket the first time. Follow the instructions below using your existing tickets for future train travel. Unfortunately you will have to go through the process individually for each traveller as you cannot add more than one journey to your existing ticket. This is what the new ticket / card looks like. Insert your card into the tray on the ticket machine ( This may be in a different position depending on the machine) The machine will ask you have you a Renfe Tu Card. Select yes and put in in the slot ( see above) if you haven't already done so. Select destination and pay as usual. The tickets are scanned unto your card. Then hold the card over the pad at the turnstile. The same at the exit.

Thanks very much for this Robert. I've copied the instructions, and adapted slightly, into a Microsoft Word document which I'll take with me when we next visit.

To be honest it's not as difficult as it first appears. I don't think it saves any time however and lots of people still throw their tickets away. A big drawback is not being able to add multiple fares to the existing ticket.

Just a copy & paste from the old forum .....
YES !
SUCCESS !
Got our personalised Tarjeta Dorada with photo some months back. However the 6 Euro part expired on 3rd December. So on our way to Malaga to see the lights, we asked at the Kiosk at Arroyo station if we could renew there? AND there was NO QUEUE !!
The guy said yes, but asked for our passports. ! HOWEVER, we had our old paper Tarjeta Dorada, and that has the passport number on it. He took 6 Euros for the next year, and we bought return tickets to Malaga, at the reduced rates.
SO, if you are going to renew with the annual fee, take your passport, or your old paper Tarjeta Dorada !
Shame we won't be able to access the OLD forum for info
